Chinatown, Singapore Self-Guided Walking Tour
Singapore, Singapore
Free, and you can start right now. Walk to Chinatown Pagoda Street, open this route in your phone's browser, and keep walking — when you reach each place, the story for that spot starts on its own. There is no app to install, no account to make, and nothing to rent or return.
8 stops · about 45 minutes · 1.4 km on foot. Short enough to fit into a half day, and you can drop stops if you have less time than that.
The route
You walk these in order. Only the opening line of each stop is quoted here — the full narration continues on the route page.
- Chinatown Pagoda Street — Welcome, friends, to the beating heart of Singapore's Chinatown!
- Sri Mariamman Temple — Hold onto your hats as we step right up to the magnificent Sri Mariamman Temple, the oldest Hindu temple in all of Singapore!
- Jamae Mosque — Stand right here with me and behold the striking Jamae Mosque, affectionately known by locals as Masjid Chulia.
- Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum — Behold the magnificent Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum, a breathtaking structure built in the rich architectural style of the Tang Dynasty.
- Chinatown Complex Food Centre — We have reached the ultimate culinary finish line of our tour—welcome to the legendary Chinatown Complex Food Centre!
- Masjid Al-Abrar — Turn onto Telok Ayer Street and the street changes character.
- Thian Hock Keng — This is Thian Hock Keng, the Palace of Heavenly Happiness, and it is the oldest and most important temple of Singapore's Hokkien community.
- Nagore Durgha — Fifty metres on, the last stop of the walk. Nagore Durgha began in the nineteenth century as a shrine and memorial to Nagore Shahul Hamid, raised by Indian Muslims — Chulia traders and labourers — who had made the same crossing as the Hokkien families next door.
Short on time?
Tell the route how long you actually have and it picks the stops that fit inside that time, keeping the order the walk was built in. You can use what it suggests as it is, or change the stops yourself. The estimated time and distance update as you do.
How it works on the day
- Open the route page in your phone's browser. Nothing to download.
- Allow location and walk to the first stop. The map numbers the stops.
- When you arrive, the narration starts. You can keep the phone in your pocket.
How this differs from the audio guide you rent on site
A rented handset usually costs money, has to be picked up and returned during opening hours, and works inside the grounds. This one is free, there is nothing to return, and there is no departure time or guide to keep up with. In exchange it is a walking route rather than an exhibit-by-exhibit commentary — it covers the way to Chinatown, Singapore and the streets around it too. They are different things rather than substitutes.
