The route
You walk these in order. Only the opening line of each stop is quoted here — the full narration continues on the route page.
- Plaça Nova & Roman Walls — Take a look around you. You're standing at the doorstep of the cathedral, but we aren't looking at the church just yet.
- Barcelona Cathedral (La Seu) — Look up at the towering facade in front of you. This is the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia, or 'La Seu' as the locals call it.
- Plaça del Rei — Step into this enclosed square. This is Plaça del Rei, and it is arguably Barcelona's most perfectly preserved medieval ensemble.
- Plaça de Sant Jaume — You are now standing in Plaça de Sant Jaume. For over 600 years, this square has been the seat of both municipal and regional government.
- El Call (Jewish Quarter) — We are now walking through El Call. The name comes from the Hebrew word 'qahal,' meaning community.
- Plaça Reial — After the tight, claustrophobic lanes of the old quarter, Plaça Reial opens up like a breath of fresh air.
- Pont del Bisbe (Bishop's Bridge) — Look up. You’re looking at the Pont del Bisbe, or Bishop's Bridge.
- Temple of Augustus — We’ve reached our final stop. I want you to head behind this unassuming door on Carrer del Paradís.
