Belgium keeps two very different old towns an hour apart by train. Bruges preserved its medieval canals, bell-tower square and the Hospital of St John; Brussels layered a grand market square, a glass-roofed arcade and Art Nouveau on top of its old core. We have one self-guided walk in each.
The Bruges walk runs from the Burg and the Markt past St John's Hospital to the Rozenhoedkaai quay and the Church of Our Lady, about 40 minutes on foot. The Brussels walk starts on the Grand-Place, passes Manneken Pis and the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert and climbs the Mont des Arts to the Musical Instruments Museum.
