Historic Cairo, founded by the Fatimids in 969 and listed by UNESCO, is one of the oldest Islamic cities still lived in. Its spine is al-Muizz Street, a kilometre of mosques, madrasas and merchant houses between two medieval gates.

Our self-guided walk enters at Bab al-Futuh, follows al-Muizz Street into the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, stops at the century-old El Fishawi café and ends on the square of the al-Hussein Mosque. About 30 minutes on foot and 1.1 km, though the bazaar will slow you down.
